George! Your Conscious Stack Design research sounds really intriguing - especially that question about trust in online societies. Good luck with the fellowship! :)
Yayy, just submitted my application! Super interesting! Hope I can bring Komma Systems (https://www.komma.systems/) representation into the Fellowship :)
Love that you applied! your question about beauty binding borderless people is really compelling. The intersection of aesthetics and digital community formation feels like a greatly unexplored area. Excited to see what you create!
This is awesome! The digital version of John and Yoko's Nutopia is pretty cool but this goes beyond https://citizenofnutopia.com website. Interested in the art side of things but cant wait to see every aspect of this project be developed.
Interesting prompts! I would say that it's hard to unite a group around "lack of connection to a place". The only core similarity shared by Digital Nomads is their desire to satisfy their preferences and maximise their own wellbeing by shopping around locations, as if for a pair of shoes. Collective selfishness is a bad foundation for a movement of any sort.
If there is a group to be formed of which borderlessness is a feature, I believe it cannot be the defining feature. There must be some other organising principle. A set of shared values, a charter, a constitution. “we like to move around” is not enough.
Anyway it sounds like you have some smart folks at Plumia thinking about these questions. Look forward to seeing more!
TLDR: Did you know Maslow's hierarchy of needs has a less-talked about stage after self-actualisation called self-transcendence? After sovereign individuals come sovereign collectives.
Also, what do you think of the Plumia values (the org behind Borderless, run by me)? https://plumia.org/values/
Thanks for the links! The Plumia values are well-written, and I do like the idea of self-transcendence as an organising principle. It has much in common with the whole ubuntu philosophy of "we are people through other people". So I would say I agree with these ideas, but I'm not necessarily inspired to action by them, if that makes sense? At least not to the degree where I would join a collective with these values and invest deeply in it. It feels like it would need something more specific for me. Maybe that's what the successful fellow can help to envision!
Love this framing, Lauren. Especially the move from sovereign individuals to sovereign collectives. It resonates deeply with my own focus in transpersonal psychology, where self-transcendence is seen as the next horizon beyond self-actualization. At Wind & Flow DAO we are experimenting with how care and appreciation can be coded into digital nations. We see Gross Relational Production (GRP) as a way of making that self-transcendence measurable: prosperity not only as individual self-actualization but as shared flourishing.
I just read through Plumia’s values too. “Belonging beyond borders” and “Human-first technology” especially struck a chord. Feels like there is a strong alignment between what you are building with Plumia and what we are prototyping in Seoul and Hahoe. Excited to explore that overlap more.
By the way I just submitted my proposal to the fellowship and it feels great to be sharing this work in dialogue with your vision.
What especially attracts me to the Plumia values is that evolutionary approach to revolutionary changes.
Regarding “Belonging beyond borders” and “Human-first technology”
What I stress in my research proposal is the importance of belonging beyond humans, so with such a refocus, it could be a more holistic vision - planet-first technology.
I'm glad to read comments on this post. What if submissions could be transparent, or at least it could be an option to allow open submission, so we, who are applying, could find colleagues with similar interests or missed expertise...
Hi Alice, you should’ve received an on-screen message after submitting your proposal, but I can confirm that we’ve received your application. We received a lot more applications than we expected so we’re still reviewing them!
i am a digital nomad from china, very lucky to see this fellowship. i am not sure what can i do,but i have a strong connection with chinese digital nomad community, maybe i can translate to chinese and share to them.
And another quesition is ,most chinese people they dont have too much english info, portfolio and website link.
Love this idea! The language barrier you mentioned is very real, I'm a Chinese native as well so can help with translation - your offer is very kind, would love to jump on a call and see what we can do on that front together if you're up for it! I'm Part of the Plumia/SafetyWing team by the way :)
Submitted! Interested in the research part.

Thank you! Yes. It’s something that brings together my whole career, but also sets us up for managing a highly technological next century.

Such a cool project, sharing in my Grants For Creators monthly funding roundup.
Sounds enticing.
Application started, will focus on the intersection between research and writing.
application submitted
This sounds exciting, just submitted my application :)

Super interesting! I'll submit my application this week!

Amazing, application submitted!

I have a hot take on this topic, I just removed the paywall so you can read it: https://globalnatives.substack.com/p/what-freedom-really-means-from-sovereign

Very much looking forward to seeing your vision laid out in your fellowship application 😉
I'd love to, but over-committed as it is sadly! I will be looking forward to seeing what others create :)

Oooo this sounds so fun! How long should the project idea be?
I’d say whatever you feel you can realistically do justice to within the three month timeframe. Can’t wait to see what you come up with :)

I love this idea! We're going to see what we can do to get permission from applicants and get a database up.
When will you be announcing the finalists/winners?
We’re aiming for early October!
Hi everyone, has anyone received a confirmation of the submission?
Hi Alice, you should’ve received an on-screen message after submitting your proposal, but I can confirm that we’ve received your application. We received a lot more applications than we expected so we’re still reviewing them!
Thank you, Eman! I’m glad to hear that so many people applied.
So excited to submit my application. So many ideas - it’s difficult to choose which one to take forward. Any tips?
A few people have submitted more than one idea, so if you’ve got a couple that you love, feel free to send them in!
